פיוט שנכתב ע"י ר' שלמה אבן גבירול, מגדולי פייטני ספרד במאה ה-11. השיר מצוי כמעט בכל עדות ישראל השונות - אצל יהודי מרוקו הוא מופיע בשירת הבקשות של שבת וירא, ואצל יהודי בבל בסדר השירים לליל הושענא רבה, אולם בפועל זהו שיר המושר בכל העדות ובכל עת, שכן זהו שיר אהבה וגעגועים של הרעיה, כנסת ישראל, אל דודה, הקב"ה, הנשען על שיר האהבה הגדול של הדוד והרעיה - שיר השירים. הרעיה והדוד מנהלים פה דו-שיח, בו הרעיה כבר לא יכולה לחכות יותר והיא מאיצה בדוד כי יתגלה, יתקרב, ויגאלה ממקומה בגלות, ואילו הדוד ממתן את הרעיה, מבקש ממנה שתחכה לרגע הנכון, לעת אשר תחפוץ האהבה מעצמה.

“Shalom L’Ben Dodi” is a poem written by Solomon Ibn Gvirol, one of the greatest poets of Spain in the 11th century. The song can be found in almost all the different ethnic groups in the Jewish community. For the Jews of Morocco, it appears in "Shirat Habakashot of Shabbat Vayera” close to the High Holidays.

Aside from the Moroccan tradition, the song can be sung at all times, since it is a song of love based on the Song of the Songs ("Shir Hashirim). The Song of Songs is an allegory of the relationship between a wife (the Jewish people) and her uncle, God. The song has a running dialogue in which the wife wants love to reveal itself and redeem her while the Uncle’s wife asks her to wait for the right moment, a metaphor often cited in the Jewish tradition’s relationship to God and redemption.
